Thinking of taking on an Apprentice?

Apprenticeship Guidelines

Taking on an apprentice can have a positive impact, by developing new talent, it can help your business thrive.

The CBA’s guide on how to take on an apprentice will help you establish what you need to know before taking on the apprentice, the reasons why you should take on an apprentice, and how you can successfully implement them into your business.

  • As a business owner, you can take on anyone that is aged between 16 to 18 years old (school leaver after GCSE’s) which can be funded or part by the government. Please ensure you check with your insurance company and adhere to any health and safety legislation regarding employing young people.

  • Your apprentice must be employed for 30 hours a week. The make-up of the 30 hours includes any time spent on college training. The apprentice will need to have a minimum GCSE qualification in Maths and English. Some time will be spent at college if the apprentice falls below the required GCSE standard.

  • You will need to pay your apprentice the standard apprentice rate over the agreed contract. The standard rate to pay an apprentice in the UK is £3.70 per hour for 30 hours a week.

  • Apprenticeships are increasingly attractive for employers who want to bring and grow new talent in their teams.

An apprentice could provide you solutions to:

    • Developing a new talent to meet your individual business needs.

    • Give existing staff more responsibility or free up their time to do something else.

    • Give your team new skills and create energy.

    • Give a young person a great career opportunity

In return, you will receive £1,000 which will be given back to you in 2 stages:

    • Stage 1: £500 after 12 weeks of employment.

    • Stage 2: £500 at the end of the agreed contract

Offering an apprenticeship is a cost-effective way of growing talent within the baking industry, it gives you the chance to play an active role in moulding your workforce and creating the future skills that they need to develop and grow into their chosen baking career.

  • If you would like more information on apprenticeships, please contact your local college to see if they have any students who wish to take on an apprenticeship.

    • Please be advised that currently there is no access to funding for apprenticeship training for over 18’s unless you are a training levy paying company.

    • Taking on an apprentice is a legally binding commitment with your apprentice and the education facility i.e., School/College.
