Congratulations to Vintage Bakery, CBA member of the month for March.

In the heart of Retford, Vintage Bakery is bringing a fresh take on traditional baking. Launched in October last year, this family-run business is the vision of Peter Whitlam, who made a bold career change from corporate leadership to artisan baking. With his son Will, an experienced baker, and daughter Bella, who runs the retail counter, Peter has created a bakery rooted in craftsmanship, quality and a passion for the community.

Vintage Bakery focuses on handmade, preservative-free bread, using simple, high-quality ingredients. The growing team takes pride in offering a range of fresh loaves, including classic sourdoughs and creative varieties like apple and sultana bread, inspired by customers’ own contributions. They source flour locally, including from North Leverton Windmill, ensuring each loaf reflects a commitment to traditional methods and local produce.

The journey to opening Vintage Bakery wasn’t without its hurdles. Finding a suitable premises was a challenge, but a Bridgegate location proved to be the perfect fit. With determination, the family transformed the space into a welcoming bakery, putting in long hours to create a shop that truly reflects their vision.

Since opening, Vintage Bakery has been embraced by the community, often selling out early in the day. They have also built strong partnerships with neighbouring businesses, including Nicole Olivia Cake Designs, creating a thriving artisan presence in Retford.

Looking ahead, the bakery is set to expand its offerings with new product lines, continuing to innovate while staying true to its values. For Peter, the move from boardrooms to baking has been both demanding and deeply rewarding. His goal is simple – to make great bread and be a part of something meaningful.
