Stenning family bakery history:
I am a third generation of master bakers.
After serving a four year apprenticeship at Rosel Patisserie under a Mr Williamson, l worked in our family bakery In Brixton, with my father and two older brothers.
In 1972, when with my wife and 1 year old son went to Carshalton Beeches, Surrey, selling traditional bread and cakes, a large loaf was 11p and a bun or doughnut was 3p! Fast forward 52 years, my wife and now four sons work six days a week with the help of 15 staff.
Over the years we have had to deal with bread subsidies; the 3 day working week, power cuts and bread strikes. Plus In store bakeries and supermarkets opening 7 days a week and more recently Covid!
During the pandemic, we split the staff into shifts and delivered bread, milk and eggs to customers who were unable to go out.
Apart from the Bakery, we now serve breakfast and lunches and on Sunday’s, afternoon teas.
With the support and loyalty of our customers, we hope our little Bakery will go on to the next generation.
Popular lines will always be hot, traditional bread and a large selection of cakes.
If my grandfather, from 1890 came into our Bakery today, apart from electricity, he would feel quite at home!
